Crustacean Pigmentary-Effector Hormones: Chemistry and Functions of RPCH, PDH, and Related Peptides1
نویسنده
چکیده
SYNOPSIS. Integumental color changes and eye pigment movements in crustaceans are regulated by pigmentary-effector hormones. The identified hormones include: an octapeptide RPCH (red pigment-concentrating hormone) and several forms of octadecapeptide PDH (pigment-dispersing hormone: a-PDH, b-PDH). RPCH-related peptides (AKHs, adipokinetic hormones) and PDH-related peptides (PDFs, pigment-dispersing factors) occur in insects, and are recognized as members of AKH/RPCH and PDH/PDF peptide families. The domain for mature peptide is located between the signal peptide and precursor-related peptide in AKH/ RPCH precursors, and at the C-terminal end in the PDH/PDF precursors. The precursor-related (associated) peptides in RPCH and PDH precursors in Crustacea show little or no similarity to corresponding domains of AKH and PDF precursors in insects. Although the functions of precursor-related peptides are unknown, the mature peptides are shown to serve diverse functions. RPCH’s actions in crustaceans include: pigment concentration in one or more types of chromatophores, dark-adaptational screening pigment movement in distal eye pigment cells, increase of retinal sensitivity, and neuromodulation. The related AKHs largely influence metabolism in insects, although they serve additional functions. PDHs trigger pigment dispersion in chromatophores and induce light-adaptational screening pigment movements in extraretinular eye pigment cells. The related PDFs appear to serve as a transmitter of circadian signals in the regulation of biological rhythms in insects. Evolutionary relationships among the PDH/PDF peptides and directions for future research are discussed.

Crustacean Peptide Hormones: Structure, Gene Expression and Function
Homeostasis, growth and reproduction in crustaceans are under endocrine control as is established in other animals. The identification of crustacean hormones and elucidation of mechanisms of hormonal regulation have been pursued extensively. Mechanisms are found to be partly similar to, but also considerably different from those in insects, although both groups of animals are arthropods. Moltin...

CCAP (Crustacean Cardioactive Peptide), Proctolin, FMRFamide, Met- and Leu-enkephalin, Substance P, RPCH (red pigment concentrating hormone) and PDH (pigment dispersing hormone) were applied to the isolated retina of the crayfish Orconectes limosus. Changes in light sensitivity, measured as changes of the amplitude of the electroretinogram (ERG) were observed after application of RPCH, PDH and ...

Crustacean ecdysis is controlled by at least three neuropeptides: moult-inhibiting hormone (MIH), which represses ecdysteroid synthesis; crustacean hyperglycaemic hormone (CHH), which not only influences ecdysteroid synthesis but also water uptake during moulting; and crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP), which is involved in stereotyped ecdysis behaviour. During embryonic development, moulti...

BACKGROUND The Ice krill, Euphausia crystallorophias is one of the species at the base of the Southern Ocean food chain. Given their significant contribution to the biomass of the Southern Ocean, it is vitally important to gain a better understanding of their physiology and, in particular, anticipate their responses to climate change effects in the warming seas around Antarctica. The distribution of red pigment concentrating hormone (RPCH)-like immunoreactivity (RPLI) in the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab, Cancer borealis, was studied using whole-mount immunocytochemistry. RPLI was seen in neuropilar processes in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG), and in somata in the oesophageal ganglion and commissural ganglia. Staining was blocked by preincubating the anti...
